Breakdown
Double 7 Stop is a quick-game man and Cover 3 beater out of Empty Chips Nasty, aligning five eligible receivers across the formation with no running back in the backfield. Both the far left and far right receivers run outside hitches (7 routes) that snap back to the sideline at five yards, while the two inside slot receivers run out routes toward the boundary and the middle slot runs a quick out that bends upfield. With the empty backfield there is no run blocking to key, so the entire concept is built on timing and getting the ball out before pressure arrives. The primary read progression starts with the outside hitch to the open side of the field, then works to the underneath out routes if the corner sits on the hitch, and finally to the backside hitch as a late escape valve.
Defensive Reads
Watch for corners playing tight man technique on the outside receivers, since that jumps the hitch route and can lead to a pick if the quarterback throws it late. Look for underneath zone defenders sinking into the passing lanes on the out routes, which signals Cover 3 or Cover 4 and tells you to speed up the throw to the hitch before the window closes. Key the flow of linebackers at the snap, since if they widen quickly to cover the out routes it opens a natural void behind them for a hitch or a quick comeback adjustment. Blitz packages with five or six rushers are the biggest threat to this concept since the empty backfield leaves no extra protection, so a user-controlled blitzer off the edge can force a bad decision before reads develop. If the defense shows a two-high shell with corners playing off, expect quick jumps on the hitch from underneath linebackers or nickel defenders, so be ready to work to the opposite side hitch or the intermediate out route instead.
Usage Tips
Pre-snap, identify which side of the field has the softer corner alignment since the outside hitches are the first read and they attack corners playing off coverage or bailing into zone.
If you see Cover 3 or Cover 4 shells with corners sitting deep, throw the hitch quickly for a free five yards before the underneath defenders can close.
Use the hot route menu to convert the inside out routes into speed outs or quick slants against man coverage if you see man alignment with defenders lined up head up on the slots.
This play is ideal on third and short or second and medium since the hitches and outs both give you easy conversion yardage without needing a deep shot.
Pair this with Dagger or Slot Sail from the same set to keep defenses guessing between quick underneath throws and shots down the field, forcing linebackers and safeties to respect both levels.
