Breakdown

Dagger from Empty Chips Nasty is a five-man route empty concept built around the deep dig and seam clear-out combo on the strong side, with the backside running a deep comeback and a low crosser. The outside receiver on the strong side runs a vertical seam to clear the middle third, while the inner receiver breaks off a deep dig behind it, creating a natural pick-and-clear read against Cover 2 and Cover 3 shells. On the backside, one receiver runs a deep comeback along the boundary and the other clears underneath on a shallow crosser, giving the quarterback a second window if the strong side is jumped. Since this is out of Empty there is no run action or blocker, so it is a pure drop back passing concept with the primary read progression going seam to dig first, then working backside to the comeback.

Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, identify safety depth and spacing since a two-high shell tells you Cover 2 is live and the dig will have a bigger throwing window behind the linebackers. A single high safety cheating toward the strong side signals Cover 3 or Cover 1, meaning the dig has to split the deep middle zone quickly before it closes. Watch linebacker depth at the snap since a lurking Mike or Sam dropping into the dig lane can jump the route if the quarterback holds it too long. Man coverage with no safety help over the seam runner is where this play gets punished hardest since the clear-out route loses its purpose without a deep safety to occupy. A well-timed inside blitz or nano blitz through Empty formations can also disrupt this play since there is no protection help and the quarterback has to get through his first read fast.

Usage Tips

Pre-snap, check for two deep safeties versus a single high safety since Dagger is designed to punish both Cover 2 and Cover 3 shells with the seam-dig combo. If the defense shows Cover 2, key the seam runner to pull the safety over the top and hit the dig sitting in the void behind the underneath defenders. Against Cover 3, the dig should settle in the deep middle hole vacated by the single high safety rotating to a third. Use motion or a hot route on the shallow crosser to convert it into a quick outlet against man coverage if you see man alignment with no safety help over the slot. Pair this play with Dagger Deep Curl or Slot Sail in the same set to keep the defense guessing on the seam-dig shell read while still threatening the same coverage weaknesses. Best called on second or third and medium to long, giving the dig and comeback time to develop against zone drops.
