Slot Choice Spot comes out of Shotgun Empty Bunch Open with 11 personnel, spreading all five eligibles wide so the defense has to declare coverage before the snap. The bunch side runs the spot concept: the outside receiver runs a corner route off the vertical stem, the middle bunch receiver runs a quick option/choice route that sits down in the flat or breaks upfield based on leverage, and the inside bunch man runs a hook into the underneath hole to complete the spot triangle. Backside, the isolated receiver runs a go route to hold the deep defender while the tight end (or slot) runs a vertical seam up the numbers, giving the quarterback a full-field high-low read. This is a zone beater built specifically to attack Cover 3, using the spot concept to flood the flat-to-hook window while the corner route climbs over the top.
Defensive Reads
This concept is a zone beater that specifically targets Cover 3 and other single high shells where the flat defender has to choose between the option route and the corner route. Pre-snap, check safety depth and corner leverage. Off corners with a single high safety signal Cover 3, which is exactly what this play is designed to exploit. Post-snap, key the flat/curl defender in the bunch side zone. If he widens to the option route, the corner behind him is wide open. If he sits under the corner, the option route sits down for an easy conversion. Watch for user-controlled defenders lurking in the underneath hook zone, since a smart user player can rob the option route or the shallow hook and force you to the backside seam or go route instead. Cover 2 and Cover 4 shells with two deep safeties can shut this down since the corner route runs into help over the top, so have a hot route or check-down ready if you see two-high pre-snap. Blitz packages that bring pressure off the edge can disrupt this timing-based concept, so identify Mike linebacker alignment and be ready to slide protection or check to a quicker route if you see an overload look.
Usage Tips
Use this on early downs or in Cover 3 heavy tendencies since the spot concept is designed to overload the flat defender and hook defender in three deep shells.
Pre-snap, identify single high safety alignment. If you see one deep safety with off corners, this is your green light play for the corner route beating the deflating flat defender.
The choice/option route out of the bunch is your first read. Watch the flat defender: if he sits, break it to the corner behind him; if he widens, settle the option route underneath for an easy conversion.
Combine this with Slot Choice Spacing from the same set to keep the defense guessing between the corner-flood look and a spacing concept that attacks underneath zones differently.
If the defense shows two-high shells pre-snap, consider checking to Dagger or Speed Dig instead since Slot Choice Spot is optimized for single high looks.
Use play-action tendencies from your gameplan sparingly here since this is a straight dropback concept, not a play-action design, so protection identification pre-snap is critical against pressure looks.
