Breakdown

Drive Y Corner is a bunch-based pass concept out of Shotgun Empty Bunch Open with 11 personnel that isolates the bunch side with a drive concept underneath and stacks a corner route on top. The two bunch receivers work a shallow drive combo, one crossing under while the other sits into a corner breaking route, while the inside bunch receiver runs a deep vertical to clear space and the backside single receiver runs a quick out to hold the flat defender. There is no run action or play-action shown here, this is a straight dropback pass designed to attack both man and zone coverage with the Y corner route as the primary answer against Cover 4 shells. The read progression starts with the corner route breaking outside, works down to the drive/shallow crosser underneath, and finishes with the backside out route as the checkdown.

Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, check safety depth and width, if both safeties are aligned deep with outside leverage on the bunch you are likely seeing Cover 4 and the corner route is your primary answer. Watch the flat defender or curl-flat player on the bunch side post-snap, if he stays home and does not widen with the corner route, the underneath drive route will be open behind him. Man coverage with inside leverage on the bunch receivers is a green light to hammer the corner route since it beats trail technique and outside leverage defenders. User-controlled lurk defenders sitting in the middle of the field can jump the drive/shallow crosser, so if you see a defender sinking into that throwing lane, work the progression back to the corner or the backside out route instead. Cover 2 shells with a hard-corner playing outside leverage can undercut the corner route, so recognize a cornerback sitting flat-footed at the snap as a sign to check into the underneath drive concept immediately.

Usage Tips

Pre-snap, identify whether the defense is showing two-high or single-high safety, since this concept is tagged as a Cover 4 beater and the Y corner route is designed to split the flat and deep quarter defenders.

If the corner attacks the receiver at the line in press man, hot route the drive/shallow route to a quick slant to beat the jam before the corner route can develop.

Use this on second and medium to second and long situations where you have time to work the full progression from corner route down to the underneath drive route.

Pair this with Bunch Arches or Cheat Slot Cross in your play-calling sequence, since both use similar bunch splits but attack different levels, keeping the defense guessing on whether you are hitting deep or quick.

Watch the backside single receiver's out route as your built-in hot route answer versus overload blitzes off that side, giving you a quick throwing lane if the corner route is not open.
