Mesh Spot out of Shotgun Empty Bunch Open lines up five wide with no back in the backfield, isolating the defense in space immediately. The bunch side runs the classic mesh combo: the inside receiver sits on a shallow drag underneath while the outside bunch receiver crosses over the top on a deeper crossing route, with the middle receiver of the bunch working a corner route up the seam. On the backside, the single receiver runs a spot concept, sitting down on a hitch/curl in the flat while the slot defender to that side clears vertically on a go route to hold the deep coverage. This is a pass play built as both a man beater (the mesh point creates natural rubs and picks) and a Cover 3 beater (the spot route sits in the hole underneath the zone). The primary read progression starts with the shallow drag/mesh crossers underneath, then works to the spot/curl sitting down against zone, before checking down to the corner route if a defender bites on the shallow routes.
Defensive Reads
Watch for user controlled linebackers sitting in the mesh point trying to jump the shallow drag or crossing route, this is the biggest threat to the play. Check safety alignment presnap, if you see two deep safeties expect Cover 2 or Cover 4 which can take away the corner route but leaves the spot and shallow open underneath. Against Cover 3, the middle linebacker's drop depth tells you if the spot route will have a window, a shallow drop opens the flat immediately. If corners are playing tight man press on the bunch receivers, expect the mesh crossers to get picked which favors the offense, but watch for a robber safety sitting in the shallow zone to jump the drag route. Blitz packages that bring extra rushers off the edge or through the A gap can disrupt this play quickly since it relies on timing, so a hot route to the spot route as a quick outlet is essential against pressure.
Usage Tips
Presnap identify if the defense is showing man or zone by checking linebacker depth and whether the bunch corner is playing tight or off, since mesh naturally creates rubs against man coverage.
Against Cover 3 or Cover 4 shells, prioritize the spot route sitting down in the flat, it will be open quickly against zone drops if the underneath defenders bite on the crossers.
Use the shallow drag as your first read against man coverage since the mesh traffic will cause defenders to get picked or hesitate, opening a easy completion.
Combine this play with Cheat Mesh or Mesh Cross from the same set to keep defenses guessing on which side the mesh point develops, forcing linebackers to freeze on route recognition.
Best called on early downs or third and short to medium since the quick underneath options give a high floor, but the corner route provides an explosive play if the defense overcommits underneath.
