Breakdown
Middle Cross aligns out of Empty Bunch Open with five receivers and no running back in the backfield, spreading the defense horizontally right from the snap. The bunch side runs a deep crossing route that stems from the outside receiver, cutting hard across the middle of the field, paired with a corner route breaking outside and an underneath out route from the innermost bunch receiver, while both backside receivers run straight vertical seams up the numbers. This is a man beater at its core, using the deep crosser to create natural separation against man defenders forced to fight through traffic, with the vertical seams on the backside occupying safeties and corners to prevent help over the top. The primary read progression starts with the deep crosser working left to right across the field, then works to the corner route as a second option before checking down to the underneath out route if the middle is jammed.
Defensive Reads
Pre-snap, identify if the defense is showing Cover 1 or Cover 3 since the deep crosser exploits the seams created by man coverage and single-high zone drops. Watch for a user-controlled linebacker sitting in the middle hook zone or spying the crosser, as this is the biggest threat to jump the route and undercut the throw. If the corners are playing off man with outside leverage, expect the corner route on the bunch side to be there quickly against man beaters. Post-snap, key the safety rotation: if both safeties bail deep into a two high shell, the crosser will have room to work but the quarterback must be quick before the pocket collapses. Cover 2 with aggressive underneath zone defenders can shut this down by taking away the crosser and the out route simultaneously, forcing a check to the backside vertical seams.
Usage Tips
Look for man coverage indicators before the snap such as corners lined up in press or shaded outside since the deep crosser thrives against man leverage.
If you see two high safeties, trust the crosser to find soft grass in the middle voids of a zone shell before checking the corner route.
Use the vertical seam routes on the backside as a hot route adjustment into a slant if the defense shows Cover 3 with an aggressive underneath flow to the bunch.
This play works best on second and medium to second and long when you have time to let the crosser develop and clear the picking traffic from the bunch alignment.
