Mesh Cross out of Shotgun Empty Bunch Open sends the two bunch receivers on a classic mesh: one runs a shallow drag underneath while the other sits down on a slot cross, crossing paths near the line to rub off man defenders. The backside receiver runs a deep dig that settles over the mesh, while the innermost bunch receiver climbs vertically before breaking back to the flat as an outlet. With no running back in the backfield, this is a pure man beater built to create natural picks against man coverage, with the deep dig as the primary read against zone drops and the mesh crossers as the initial progression versus man.
Watch for a linebacker sitting in the mesh area, that is the lurk defender designed to jump the shallow crossers. Man coverage with no safety help over the top is the shell this beats most consistently due to the natural rub at the mesh point. Cover 3 or Cover 4 zone shells can bracket the dig route, so key the deep safety rotation before the snap. If the defense shows blitz with man behind it, the shallow drag becomes the checkdown against pressure since it clears the mesh point quickly. User-controlled defenders sitting at the mesh point signal a jump route attempt, so be ready to layer the throw over the top or reset to the dig read.
Attack man coverage first since the mesh point is designed to create traffic and separation against trailing defenders.
Pre-snap, check for MLB or safety cheating into the mesh area, if the shell shows heavy man look with a single high safety, trust the crossers.
Use motion or a hot route to adjust the vertical climber into a deeper post if you see two-high shells rolling to zone.
Pair this play with Mesh Spot or Cheat Mesh from the same set to keep defenders guessing on mesh timing and depth.
Best called on 2nd or 3rd and medium when defenses are more likely to sit in man coverage to stop the run.
Combine with Speed Dig or Dagger from the set as a follow-up call once the defense adjusts to the mesh action.
