Spot Lead Swing is a classic Spot concept out of Shotgun Duo Slot Open, built to attack zone coverage with layered route depths. The backside receiver runs a deep corner route while the inside slot man works a corner/flag route from the middle of the field, creating a natural high low stretch. On the frontside, one receiver runs a quick hitch/curl at the sticks while the back releases into a swing route to the flat, and a fullback or extra blocker sets up a lead block in front of the swing to spring extra yards after catch. The primary read starts with the flat to swing combo underneath, then works up to the hitch and finally to the deep corner if the defense sinks its zone coverage.

Defensive Reads

Key the flat defender first, if he sits on the swing route immediately the hitch route behind him becomes open in the void. Watch linebacker depth at the snap, shallow linebackers signal man coverage while deeper drops indicate a zone shell that this Spot concept is designed to punish. If the safety rotates down to help on the deep corner route, the middle of the field opens up for the underneath curl and swing combo. This play struggles against aggressive Cover 2 man blitzes where the flat defender jumps the swing route immediately, so be ready to check into a quicker hitch throw. Look for user controlled defenders sitting in the shallow flat zone, since the AI defender is more likely to bite on the swing route while a user lurk will sit and wait for the hitch throw.

Usage Tips

Use this play on second and short or third and short when the defense is likely to sit in zone coverage underneath.

Pre-snap, identify if the defense is showing Cover 3 or Cover 4 shells, since the swing to flat read is designed to exploit the seam defenders who have to choose between the flat and the corner route.

Hot route the backside deep corner route into a quick out if you see man coverage with no safety help over the top, turning this into a quicker rhythm throw.

Trust the lead blocker on the swing route to seal off the first defender, then look to break the run outside once you see the flat defender commit inside.
