Spot Lead Swing out of Shotgun Duo Slot Open is a five-man spot concept built to attack Cover 3 and other zone shells. The outside receivers on both sides run vertical clearout routes to occupy the deep thirds, while the slot runs a quick corner route into the flat area vacated by the cleared defender. Underneath, one back runs a swing route to the flat and the other slot runs a short drag/spot route across the middle, giving the quarterback a high-low read from the flat swing to the corner sit route with the drag as the checkdown.
Defensive Reads
Identify single-high safety alignment pre-snap since that usually signals Cover 3, which this concept is designed to exploit with the corner sit route. Watch the flat defender's depth at the snap, if he widens hard to the swing route the corner route behind him will be wide open for the quarterback. Key the slot cornerback's leverage, inside leverage tips zone drop responsibilities while outside leverage often means man coverage that can be beaten with the drag crossing underneath. User players should be alert for a lurking linebacker sitting in the shallow drag lane, as this is the biggest threat to jumping the underneath route. Cover 2 with aggressive corners squatting on the flat can disrupt the swing and corner combo, so send a hot route audible to the backside if you see two deep safeties presnap.
Usage Tips
Check the middle of the field pre-snap: if the safety rotates to a single-high shell, expect Cover 3 and trust the corner route to sit down behind the flat defender. Use the swing route as your first read against blitz-heavy calls since it gets the ball out fast and punishes overaggressive edge pressure. Motion the swing back pre-snap to confirm man versus zone, if the defender follows across the formation it is man coverage and you should look to the drag or corner instead. Pair this play with PA Fin or PA Flood in your call sheet to keep linebackers honest on early downs before dialing up the swing concept on third and short. Best used on third and 1 to 5 or on early downs when you want a low-risk, high-percentage completion against zone-heavy defenses.
