Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, check for a single high safety and cornerback depth on the flood side, since soft corners and deep thirds tell you Cover 3 is live and the corner route will have room. Post-snap, key the flat defender: if he sinks with the corner route the flat is wide open, and if he jumps the flat the corner route behind him is the throw. Watch for a hard flat blitz or nano blitz off the edge on the play-action side, which can disrupt the timing of the boot and force an early checkdown to the dig. Against Cover 4 or two-high match coverage, the deep corner route usually gets bracketed, so shift focus to the backside dig and underneath flat as the answers. Use the flat route as your check-down against pressure or when the corner route is blanketed, especially on early downs when a positive gain keeps you on schedule.

Hot route the backside dig into a deeper crosser or a hitch if you are seeing heavy zone drops to that side, giving you a true field-stretching answer versus two-high shells.
