PA Fin is a play-action shot play out of Shotgun Duo Slot Open that dresses up like an inside zone run before releasing four vertical stems. Off the play fake, the backside X runs a deep post that cuts across the field while the outside receiver on that side clears vertically up the sideline, creating a natural high low crossing combo over the top. The slot receiver runs a vertical seam and the lone receiver to the other side runs a quick out breaker, giving the quarterback a full field read from deep shots to a quick outlet. This is a man beater and zone beater built for explosive plays, with the deep crossing post as the primary read and the vertical seam as the number two option if the safety jumps the post.
Defensive Reads
Pre-snap, identify single high versus two high shells since this play is designed to attack both but the post route benefits most from a single high safety who has to respect the run fake. Watch linebacker depth at the snap: if the linebackers step up hard on the play fake, the middle of the field opens for the crossing post and seam routes. Post-snap, key any user-controlled safety who stays deep and does not bite on the run fake since that defender can undercut or rob the post route. Cover 3 with a deep middle defender who stays disciplined is one of the tougher shells to beat here since it clogs the post and seam lanes simultaneously. Man coverage with no safety help over the top is the most exploitable shell for this play since the play fake creates natural separation on the vertical breaks.
Usage Tips
Use PA Fin on early downs like first and second and short when the defense is expecting inside zone based on personnel and formation tendencies.
Check the safety alignment pre-snap: if you see two high safeties sitting deep, the post crossing route can settle into the void once the safety flows with run action.
Against man coverage, trust the deep post to win off the play fake since defenders biting on the run action will be a step slow to the route break.
Pair PA Fin with Inside Zone and RPO Read HB Flat earlier in a drive to sell the run fake and get defenders creeping up before hitting them with this shot play.
If the corner on the post side is playing off man or soft zone, consider hot routing the quick out to a hitch or slant to keep the underneath option live against zone drops.
