HB Swing out of Shotgun Duo Slot Open sends the halfback out of the backfield on a swing route that bends upfield to the flat, while the outside receiver runs a corner route to clear out the boundary and the slot receiver runs a deep vertical to occupy the deep defenders. The offensive line executes a check release protection scheme, giving the quarterback a quick outlet against pressure. This is a man beater screen concept designed to get the halfback matched up on a linebacker in open space, with the primary read being the HB swing first, then the corner route breaking outside if the underneath defender sinks with the back.
Watch for man coverage indicators pre-snap such as cornerbacks aligned tight to receivers with no safety help over the top, since this play attacks man to man matchups on the halfback. Key the middle linebacker depth at the snap, if he sits in a shallow zone he can undercut the swing route and blow up the primary read. Identify if the defense shows Cover 3 or Cover 4 zone shells, as the deep corner route and vertical from the slot are meant to hold zone defenders and open the swing lane underneath. Look for a user controlled defender spying the backfield or lurking in the shallow flat, since that defender can jump the swing route before it develops. Against blitz heavy fronts, check if the check release protection can hold up, a well timed nano blitz off the edge can beat the halfback to the flat before he escapes the backfield.
Call this on early downs or third and short when you need a high percentage completion against aggressive man coverage. Check pre-snap for blitz indicators such as walked up linebackers or a single high safety, since check release protection can get overwhelmed by a six man rush. Hot route the corner route receiver into a quick slant if the cornerback is playing off coverage to give the quarterback a faster second read. Use this play after running Inside Zone or Triple Option Rt to sell run action and get linebackers flowing away from the swing lane. Pair it with PA Flood or Levels in your play calling sequence to keep the defense honest between quick game and shot plays off the same personnel look.
