Breakdown

Inside Zone out of Shotgun Duo Slot Open is a zone run play with the HB aligned next to the QB and the offensive line flowing laterally to create a vertical crease. The diagram shows the running back taking a downhill path through the middle of the formation while the line executes zone steps to seal gaps, with a slot receiver releasing to occupy a second level defender. This is a run play designed to beat light boxes and zone fronts by letting the back read the double team blocks and pick the correct crease, with the primary read progression starting at the play side double team before bending back to the backside cutback lane if the frontside gap gets clogged.

Defensive Reads

Watch linebacker depth at the snap, since linebackers sitting too shallow will get sealed by the zone steps and open the cutback lane. Identify one high safety shells pre-snap because a single deep safety usually means an extra man in the box, which forces you to trust the cutback read instead of forcing it frontside. Key the play side defensive tackle and end for two gap responsibility versus one gap penetration, since penetrating fronts blow up zone runs before the back can press the line. User controlled defenders flying downhill from a linebacker spot are the biggest threat to this play, so freeze them with your eyes before committing to a gap. This play struggles against overloaded fronts with extra defenders stacked inside, so if you see a heavy box with both safeties creeping down, consider audibling to HB Swing or Spot Lead Swing instead.

Usage Tips

Check the box count pre-snap and only run this into six or fewer defenders in the box to avoid running into a stacked front.

Use the left or right trigger to manually pick your gap if the CPU blocking logic starts the back into a clogged lane, since Inside Zone rewards patience over pure speed bursts.

Pair this with Triple Option Rt and RPO Read HB Flat from the same Duo Slot Open set so the defense has to respect the same zone run action while you mix in perimeter reads.

Run this on early downs like first and ten or second and short to stay ahead of the chains and set up PA Fin or PA Flood later in the series off the same look.

Against defenses that crash hard on outside runs, this play's interior design punishes overaggressive edge defenders and linebackers flowing too fast to the flow.
