Duo Slot Open is a power run play out of Shotgun 20 personnel that uses a Duo blocking scheme, meaning the offensive line double teams at the point of attack and works vertically to the second level to create a movable crease for the running back. This is not a man or zone beater since it is a designated run play, and the primary read progression is for the running back to press the initial gap, read the double team blocks, and cut to daylight based on how the linebackers flow. The open slot alignment can help identify blitz packages before the snap, giving the ball carrier an early key on which side to attack.
Pre-snap, check safety depth and box count since Duo Slot Open is most effective against light boxes with six or fewer defenders in the run fit. Watch for linebackers cheating toward the open slot side, which often signals a run blitz or a nano blitz designed to crash the play before the double teams develop. Post-snap, key the flow of the play side linebacker, since Duo relies on him getting sealed or washed out to open the cutback lane. This play struggles against gap-sound defenses like odd fronts with a stacked linebacker behind the nose tackle, since that alignment clogs the double team lanes immediately. If the user controls a linebacker and sits in the hole reading the mesh point, avoid forcing the initial crease and look to cut back away from the user defender.
Use this play on early downs in first and second and short to medium yardage situations where defenses expect balance rather than a pure power run look.
Check the slot receiver alignment pre-snap since Duo Slot Open often signals blitz timing if the defense shifts a linebacker over the open slot.
Pair this with Inside Zone in your play-calling sequence so defenses cannot key on gap direction, since both plays start similarly but hit different creases.
If the defense stacks the box with extra defenders, motion out of this play into RPO Read HB Flat to punish overcommitted linebackers.
Use manual control on your lead blocker at the second level to seal off linebackers flowing hard to the play side, since the AI blocking engine can miss cutback lanes.
Mix in PA Fin or PA Flood off this same personnel grouping to keep safeties honest and prevent them from crashing down on early run reads.
