PA Rollout Out-N-Up is a play-action rollout concept out of Shotgun Duo Slot Open that sells the run fake to the boundary before the quarterback rolls out to attack the flat and vertical seam on the same side. The out-n-up double move is designed to bait an aggressive cornerback or underneath zone defender with the initial out break before snapping vertical up the sideline, making this primarily a man beater against corners playing outside leverage or squatting on the flat. Blocking flows with the rollout protection to the play side, so the primary read progression is flat defender first to see if he bites on the out step, then the deep sideline shot if he does, with the underneath crosser or check down serving as the answer if the defense sits back.

Defensive Reads

Watch the play side cornerback pre-snap, if he is playing off with outside shade he is more likely to jump the out portion of the route and get beat over the top. Identify single high versus two high safety shells before the snap, single high with man coverage underneath is the ideal shell for this double move to hit for a big play. Post-snap, track the flat or curl to flat zone defender, if he sinks and does not bite on the out step the up route window closes and the quarterback should reset to the checkdown. Cover 2 and Cover 4 shells with a deep half or deep quarter safety sitting over the top take away the up route and force the quarterback into the shorter flat or drag options. Watch for a user controlled defender lurking the flat, a smart human opponent will often sit on the out break specifically to bait the quarterback into an interception on the double move.

Usage Tips

Call this on early downs or in play-action friendly counts like second and short to keep the run fake believable to the second level defenders.

Key the flat defender before the snap, if you see a corner playing tight man or a linebacker cheating up expecting run support, the double move has a strong chance to hit.

Use the rollout to buy extra time against edge pressure, and if the corner sits deep on the up route, work back down to the shorter option in the flat or drag instead of forcing the ball deep.

Pair this play with PA Rollout Smash or PA Rollout in the same set so the defense has to respect both the shorter smash concept and the deep double move off identical rollout action.

Hot route the backside receiver into a quick drag or spot route if you expect man coverage, giving the quarterback a checkdown when the primary side is capped by a deep half safety.
