Defensive Reads
Watch the cornerback depth on the comeback side pre-snap. A corner playing tight man or hard press invites a blitz look, so get the ball out quick before the sit-down route is undercut. Identify two high safeties, since that shell signals Cover 2 or Cover 4 and tells you the comeback will be open against the off corner while the dig has to split the underneath zone defenders. Key the middle linebacker or the deep safety rotation after the snap. If the safety bites on the vertical clear-out route, the window for the dig behind him opens immediately. User-controlled defenders sitting in the middle of the field as a lurk threat are the primary danger to the dig route, so if you see a defender spying that area, look comeback or checkdown instead. Cover 3 with a deep half safety-turned-single high robber usually shuts down the intermediate crosser, so be ready to check down to the back in the flat if the middle is clogged.
Usage Tips
Check the safety alignment pre-snap. Two high safeties with soft corners funnel your eyes immediately to the comeback route since the corner will be sitting off the line. Single high or Cover 3 shells push the read to the deep dig sitting behind the linebackers in the vacated middle zone. Use the vertical clear-out route to occupy the deep safety and open a throwing lane for the dig, especially against zone drops that widen late. This play works best on second and long or third and medium when defenses back off into zone to protect against the sticks. Hot route the running back to a quick flat or check release if you expect a blitz look, since the extra protection help lets the deep routes develop. Pair this with Dagger X Comeback in your play-calling sequence to attack both sides of the field and keep the defense guessing on which comeback route you are hitting.
