Breakdown
Spot out of Shotgun Bunch Quads shows a classic Spot concept built to attack Cover 3 and other zone shells. The lone receiver to the left runs a corner route to clear the flat and stretch the deep third, while the bunch side stacks a flat route, a hitch/spot route at the sticks, and a wheel route from the inside receiver working outside and up the sideline. The RB releases on a check release into the shallow drag/flat area, giving the QB a layered progression from flat to spot to wheel underneath the corner route on the backside.
Defensive Reads
Read the flat defender first, since he decides whether the spot route or flat route is open underneath. Watch for a sinking cornerback or Cover 3 buzz linebacker, since a slow rotation opens a throwing lane to the sticks route. If the defense shows man coverage, the wheel route from the bunch is your first look since it creates natural rub and separation off the stack. Key the deep third defender to the play side, if he bites on the flat route the wheel will win up the sideline for an explosive gain. Beware of a Cover 3 sky or a linebacker spy sitting in the shallow zone, since disciplined zone defenders can rob the spot route and force a checkdown.
Usage Tips
Pre-snap, identify if the safeties are showing two high or rotating to single high, since this concept thrives against Cover 3 zone drops.
Use the corner route on the backside as a clear-out to hold the corner and free up the spot and wheel combo underneath.
Hot route the RB into a quick flat or check release protection call if you see a blitz look with extra rushers off the edge.
This play pairs well with Bunch Trail and Mtn Spot in the same set since they show similar bunch alignment but attack different levels, keeping defenders guessing.
Best called on third and medium or third and long when the sticks route and wheel combo can pick up a first down against sitting linebackers.
