Mtn WR Swing out of Shotgun Bunch Quads sends the backside X on a shallow motion path that angles upfield into a deep corner route, while the near receiver out of the bunch releases on a swing route into the flat as the underneath checkdown. The blocking assignments up front hold protection in a standard pass set, keeping the pocket clean for a quick progression read from flat to deep corner. This is a man beater at its core, using the swing route to attack overplayed underneath coverage while the corner route stresses a trailing defender over the top, and the primary read progression starts with the swing in the flat before working back to the corner route on a delayed drop.
Defensive Reads
Man coverage with no safety help over the top of the bunch is the biggest liability, since the corner route will win against a trailing defender in phase. Watch for a linebacker or slot corner sinking into the flat immediately at the snap, which signals zone coverage and should push your eyes to the corner route sooner. Cover 3 or Cover 4 shells with a deep defender staying home over the corner route can take away the big play, forcing the checkdown to the swing. User-controlled defenders jumping the swing route out of the backfield can bait a quick throw, so be ready to hit the corner route if the user bites early. A blitz look with the flat defender vacating for pressure leaves the swing route wide open, so identify pressure pre-snap and get the ball out fast.
Usage Tips
Pre-snap, look for the corner or safety cheating over the bunch since that tips man coverage and opens up the swing route as an easy completion.
If the defense shows a hard flat defender sitting on the swing, hold the ball an extra beat and let the corner route climb vertically for a bigger chunk play.
Use motion pre-snap to confirm man versus zone: if a defender follows the motion man across the formation, you have a clean man beater and should trust the swing early.
This play pairs well with Mtn Spot and Mtn Verticals from the same set since all three attack different levels off the same bunch look, keeping the defense honest.
Best called on early downs or third and short where the swing route alone can pick up the sticks against aggressive underneath coverage.
