Breakdown

Mtn Spot out of Shotgun Bunch Quads sends the bunch into a classic Spot concept: the inside receiver runs a quick hitch/corner read at the sticks, the middle bunch man clears vertically with a hard corner route to the sideline, and the point man runs an angle route back underneath into the flat, forming the traditional hi-lo Spot triangle. The backside X releases on a deep vertical to hold the single-high safety and clear space underneath, while the RB runs a shallow drag/swing from the backfield as the checkdown. This is a classic Cover 3 beater built to attack the flat-to-curl seam, with the primary read progression working the corner route first, then working down to the flat/angle route, and finishing with the drag as the outlet against zone drops.

Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, check safety depth: a single high safety cheating toward the bunch side signals Cover 3 or Cover 1, both of which this Spot concept is designed to attack with the flat-to-corner combo. Watch the cornerback aligned over the bunch; if he sinks deep at the snap without matching a receiver, that confirms zone and opens the angle route sitting underneath him. Post-snap, key the underneath linebacker or nickel defender responsible for the curl-flat zone; if he widens with the corner route, the angle route sitting behind him becomes the money throw. This play struggles against Cover 2 or Cover 4 shells with two deep safeties, since the corner route runs into help and the flat gets squeezed by an underneath zone defender sitting on the sticks. User-controlled lurk defenders sitting in the shallow middle can jump the drag route, so keep an eye on any defender spying the RB before committing to the checkdown.

Usage Tips

Use pre-snap motion out of the bunch to identify if the defense is playing man or zone; if a defender follows the motion man across the formation, expect man coverage and prioritize the angle route since it creates natural separation off the break.

Against Cover 3, work your progression fast: corner route first to attack the deep third, then peek the flat/angle combo underneath as the corner defender sinks, and dump to the drag if the underneath zone defenders squeeze the throwing window.

This is a strong 3rd and short to 3rd and medium call because the Spot concept's flat and angle routes settle in soft spots right at the sticks.

Pair Mtn Spot with Mtn Verticals in your play-calling sequence; if defenders start jumping the flat/angle combo after seeing Spot on tape, hit them with verticals off the same bunch look to keep the safety honest.

Hot route the drag to a flat route if you see a linebacker spying the underneath zone, giving your RB a quicker access throw against blitz-heavy looks.
