Spacing out of Shotgun Bunch Quads is a horizontal stretch concept designed to beat zone coverage, particularly Cover 3 and Cover 4. From the bunch alignment, the receivers run a staggered series of hitches and a short in cut that sit at different depths across the field, while the backside X runs an up the sideline route that turns into a deep comeback to hold the corner and safety. The lone RB releases vertically up the numbers on a seam or wheel to attack the void behind the underneath zone defenders, giving the quarterback a full field horizontal progression from the flat hitches out to the deep comeback.
Pre-snap, check safety depth and corner alignment on the bunch side since soft zone shells with deep safeties are the biggest tell that Spacing is coming. Post-snap, key the underneath linebackers and nickel defenders to see if they widen with the hitch routes or stay home, since a lurking defender sitting in the shallow zone can jump the quick game reads. Watch for a Cover 3 buzz or Cover 4 quarters shell rotating late, as these are the exact coverages this concept is built to exploit. If the defense shows man coverage with no natural pick help, the offense loses the built in rub advantage from the bunch, so blitzing off the edge or running man match concepts with a hard trail technique can disrupt the timing before the deep comeback route develops.
Pre-snap, identify if the defense is showing a two high or one high safety shell since Spacing thrives against Cover 3 and Cover 4 zone drops. Progress read from the shortest hitch route outward to the deep comeback, working underneath to over the top based on how the zone defenders flow with the bunch release. Use hot routes to convert one of the short hitches into a speed out if you see man coverage bleeding into the bunch, since the natural spacing still creates rub potential. Pair this play with Bunch Trail or Drag Under in your call sheet so the defense cannot sit on the same horizontal stretch concept every snap. This play works best on second and short to medium distance where defenses are more likely to sit in zone shells rather than blitz.
