Read Option out of Shotgun Bunch HB Str is a zone read run play that puts the quarterback in a true dual threat mechanic against unblocked edge defenders. The offensive line executes an inside zone scheme to the play side while the bunch alignment (1 RB 1 TE) helps seal the perimeter and occupy defenders with natural picks. The primary read is the backside edge defender: if he crashes down on the running back, pull the ball and attack the alley, if he stays home or sits, hand it off and let the zone blocking work up front.
Watch the defensive end or outside linebacker on the backside edge before the snap to see if he is sitting wide to force the pull or crashing down to take away the dive. Check safety depth: a single high safety shell (Cover 3 or Cover 1) leaves light boxes and favors the quarterback keep, while two deep safeties (Cover 2 or Cover 4) often means an extra run defender is already in the box. Post-snap, track any user controlled defender spying the quarterback, since a spy or lurk defender can eliminate the keep option and force you into the give read every time. Look for scrape exchange technique from the linebackers, where the backside linebacker replaces the crashing end, since this is the primary counter that stops the zone read cold. Man coverage with blitz packages that bring extra edge pressure can beat this play if the quarterback is not decisive at the mesh point, so a quick and accurate read is essential against overload blitzes.
Pre-snap, check the box count and identify if the defense has a true edge defender to read versus a scraping linebacker who disguises the assignment. Use motion out of the bunch to confirm man versus zone coverage before the snap, since a defender following the motion man across the formation signals man coverage and opens up the pull read on the perimeter. Hot route the backside receiver on a quick slant or drag if you see soft zone shells, since this gives you a built in answer if the defense sells out to stop the run. This play hits best on early downs (first and 10, second and short) when defenses are still respecting balanced personnel and have not loaded the box. Pair this with Inside Zone from the same set to keep the defense honest on their edge read, then come back with PA Bunch Shot off the identical run action once linebackers start crashing hard on the mesh point. Against aggressive user defenders who consistently jump the running back on the give read, key on their tendency and pull the ball every time until they adjust.
