Spacing out of Shotgun Bunch HB Str is a horizontal stretch concept designed to attack zone coverage, particularly Cover 3 and Cover 4 shells, by stacking receivers at different depths along the same sideline. The bunch alignment creates natural rubs off the line that make it tough for zone defenders to pass off underneath routes, while the spacing routes settle into soft spots at five, six, and ten yard depths to sit down against zone drops. This is a timing based pass play, not a man beater by design, so the primary progression works low to high or sideline in, reading the flat defender first before working to the intermediate hitch and finally the deep hole route if the safety bites underneath.
Pre-snap, identify safety depth and alignment first, since two deep safeties signal Cover 4 or Cover 2 while a single high safety points to Cover 3, both coverages this concept is built to exploit. Watch the flat defender or curl to flat zone player closely after the snap, since a slow reroute or hard sink into the hitch route opens the flat throw immediately. Key linebacker depth at the snap, because shallow dropping linebackers who sit on the short spacing routes will get beat by the vertical hole route working behind them. Be alert for user controlled lurk defenders sitting in the throwing lane between the hitch and the deep route, as smart users will bait the quarterback into a turnover by disguising a zone drop underneath the intermediate window. This concept struggles against press man coverage with underneath help, particularly Cover 1 or Cover 0 blitz packages, since there is no built in hot route answer for immediate pressure off the edge.
Use pre-snap motion out of the bunch to confirm man versus zone before the snap, since a defender following the motion man declares man coverage and tells you to attack elsewhere. Against zone shells like Cover 3 or Cover 4, trust the spacing concept and work your low to high read quickly, hitting the flat or shallow hitch before the underneath defenders can drive on the throw. This play thrives on third and short to third and medium since the sit down routes give the quarterback a high percentage completion window against zone drops. Pair Spacing with Y Trail or Switch Flood in your play calling sequence, since both punish man coverage and give you a complementary man beater if the defense adjusts after seeing Spacing beat their zone look. If the defense starts sitting on the underneath routes after multiple reps, dial up 49ers Dig or Drive X Corner from the same set to hit the intermediate and deep zones vacated by aggressive underneath defenders.
