Z Spot is a quick-hitting spot concept out of the Bunch HB Str bunch formation, designed to attack Cover 3 zone drops with a five step timing combo of a flat route, a spot (curl) route, and a corner route working from the bunch alignment. The HB stays in to check release and leaks out as a safety valve, giving the quarterback a built in outlet if the underneath zones close down. This is a zone beater at its core, with the primary read progression starting at the corner route to hold the deep third defender, then working down to the spot sitting in the hook zone, and finishing to the flat as the checkdown against a hard curl-flat rotation.
Key the middle linebacker's depth at the snap, if he sinks hard into the hook zone he is sitting on the spot route and you need to speed up your corner read. Watch for a sky or cloud rotation from the safety toward the bunch, this tells you the corner route will get support and the spot underneath becomes the priority throw. User controlled defenders lurking in the shallow flat zone will jump the checkdown, so bait that defender with your eyes before coming back to the flat late. This concept struggles against a hard match zone or Cover 4 with a linebacker spying the bunch release, since the extra underneath defender clogs both the spot and flat windows simultaneously. Straight blitzes with man coverage behind them can beat this play quickly since the route combo take extra time to develop, so recognize five or six man rushes pre-snap and be ready to hit the flat route as a quick outlet.
Pre-snap, identify whether the defense is showing a three deep shell or a two high look, since Z Spot is built specifically to punish Cover 3 zone drops. If you see man coverage indicators like a corner shaded outside with no safety help over the bunch, consider audibling to a different concept in the set since this play loses some of its man beating traction. Use the corner route as a clear out to hold the deep third defender before working the spot route sitting down in the hook zone, this is the bread and butter rhythm throw. Hot route the flat defender's man to a quick out if you see a linebacker sinking too deep into the spot's window, this keeps the timing intact against disciplined zone drops. Pair Z Spot with Spacing or Mtn RPO Peek Flats on early downs to establish a rhythm passing attack, then mix in Y Trail or Drive X Corner on third down once the defense starts jumping the spot route.
