Drive X Corner is a Cover 4 beater built out of the Bunch HB Str formation in Shotgun 11 personnel. The bunch alignment creates natural rub action for the drive concept underneath while the X receiver runs a corner route to attack the deep outside quarter, forcing a conflict between the flat defender and the deep quarter defender. The primary read progression starts with the corner route against a single high or Cover 4 shell, then works down to the drive/crossing routes underneath if the deep safety squats or the corner sits on the sideline throw.
Pre-snap, identify whether the corner is playing over the top of the bunch or bailing into a deep quarter, that leverage tells you if the corner route has a soft window outside. Watch the safety depth at the snap, if the deep safety stays high and does not widen with the corner route, the window closes and you should reset to the underneath drive concept. Key the flat defender coming out of the bunch rub, if he gets picked or hesitates on the rub, the drive route underneath will be wide open for an easy completion. On defense, play a true Cover 4 with disciplined quarter defenders who stay square to the corner route and do not bite on the underneath drive action. Watch for user pressure off the edge, since the corner route takes time to develop, a well timed simulated pressure or nano blitz can disrupt the timing before the throw is delivered.
Check the safety alignment before the snap, if you see two deep safeties split wide with corners playing outside leverage that is your Cover 4 or Cover 2 read for the corner route to win. Use the bunch release to identify man coverage quickly, if defenders trail in man across the formation, hot route the underneath drive route into a slant or option route to beat the rub. Attack this play on second and medium to third and long situations where defenses lean on zone shells to prevent big plays over the middle. Motion the HB or adjust the bunch spacing pre-snap to see if the defense shifts, a shift confirms zone and tells you to trust the corner route on time. Pair this with Seattle or Z Spot from the same set to keep the defense guessing between vertical shots and quick game, then come back to Drive X Corner once you have seen a Cover 4 shell on tape.
