Y Trail out of Shotgun Bunch HB Str is a man beater built around the trail route from the Y receiver working across the formation underneath the bunch traffic to shake press or trail technique corners. The bunch alignment naturally picks off man defenders at the line, freeing the Y to break open on the crossing pattern while the outside receivers run vertical or corner routes to clear space and hold the safety shell. Blocking is standard pass protection with the HB releasing late as a checkdown, and the primary read progression starts with the Y trail route, then works to the corner or vertical breakout route, and finishes with the HB in the flat.
Watch the corner assigned to the bunch receivers pre-snap, if he is playing tight man or trail technique the rub from the bunch release will spring the Y open almost immediately Key the middle linebacker depth at the snap, a shallow drop or blitz look on that side removes the shortest checkdown but also opens a bigger throwing lane for the trail route behind him Identify single high versus two high safety shells before the snap, single high man coverage with no deep help over the bunch is the easiest shell to attack with this concept Be alert for a user controlled safety or nickel defender sitting in the shallow zone as a lurk threat, since a disciplined zone defender who reads quarterback eyes can undercut the trail route if the throw is late Cover 2 or Cover 4 shells with disciplined underneath zone defenders and no natural pick on the bunch can shut this play down, forcing the quarterback to check to the HB flat route or scramble outside the pocket
Pre-snap, check for man coverage indicators like inside leverage on the bunch or a corner shaded over the Y receiver, since the natural rub from the bunch alignment is what makes this route hard to trail in man technique
If the defense shows off coverage or a soft corner, hot route the Y to a quicker option or bump the snap count to attack before the safety can rotate over the top
Use this play on second and medium or third and short to medium since the trail route develops quickly and gives the quarterback a high percentage completion versus man coverage
