49ers Dig is a man beater route concept out of the Bunch formation designed to attack the middle of the field with a hard-breaking dig route sitting behind the linebackers. The bunch alignment creates natural rub action that helps the receivers escape man coverage press and pick contact, while the backside typically holds a vertical or corner route to hold the safety. The primary read progression starts with the dig route crossing the field underneath zone drops or trailing man defenders, then works to the bunch flat or drag as the checkdown, with the deep shot as a late-window option if the safety bites on the dig.
Watch for a single high safety pre-snap combined with tight man coverage on the bunch receivers, this alignment tells you the dig will have room to work against man defenders who get picked off by the rub. Key the middle linebacker depth at the snap, if he sinks too early into a deep zone drop the dig window opens immediately underneath him, if he sits shallow and reads the quarterbacks eyes he can jump the route and undercut the throw. Cover 3 with a hard flat drop from the corner is the biggest zone beater matchup here since the dig settles right in the seam behind the corner and in front of the deep third safety. User the middle linebacker or a rover defender to sit in the passing lane and bait the quarterback into throwing the dig, then close hard once the ball is thrown since this route lacks separation once the defender gets an early jump. Cover 2 with aggressive underneath zone drops and a robber defender crashing down on the dig can shut this play down completely, especially if the defense diagnoses the bunch rub package before the snap and rotates a safety down to help.
Presnap identify whether the defense is showing man or zone by checking safety depth and corner alignment on the bunch, tight press corners with a single high safety usually means man coverage and this is the time to trust the dig against the rub.
Use motion out of the bunch if available to force the defense to declare man coverage early, if a defender follows the motion man you know its man and the dig will have room to work against linebackers who cannot match the horizontal break.
Hot route the backside receiver into a quick out or speed out against zone shells like Cover 3 or Cover 4 to give yourself a faster underneath answer if the dig window closes.
This play pairs well with Y Trail and Z Spot in the same set since both attack similar horizontal zone voids, run 49ers Dig on early downs to bait Cover 3 defenders into sitting shallow, then hit Drive X Corner off the same look once the defense adjusts to the dig underneath.
Best used on second and medium to third and long situations where linebackers are more likely to sink into shallow zone drops, giving the dig route a clean throwing lane between the levels.
