Breakdown

Inside Zone out of Shotgun Bunch HB Str is a true zone run play designed to attack the interior gaps with a double team at the point of attack and a backside cutback lane. The offensive line steps in unison to the play side, working combo blocks on the down linemen before climbing to the second level, while the bunch alignment to the strength side occupies second level defenders and can pull a linebacker or safety out of the box pre-snap. The primary read progression for the running back starts at the play side double team, then to the backside cutback if the frontside gets clogged, letting the RB press the line and pick the crease based on the flow of the linebackers.

Defensive Reads

Watch the linebacker depth at the snap, if both linebackers crash hard to the play side flow, bounce or cut the run backside using the natural rebound lane created by the zone steps. Identify safety rotation before the snap, a single high safety shell means the box is lighter and this run has room to work, while two deep safeties with stacked linebackers signals a loaded front that will win with numbers. Key the play side defensive tackle and end for penetration, if they shoot gaps instead of reading the zone steps you can bounce outside off the double team. User controlled defenders flashing down into the box or a linebacker showing blitz timing pre-snap are the biggest threats to this run, since a well timed A gap shoot can blow up the mesh point before the back gets to the line. This run gets shut down by stacked fronts with edge defenders staying home and linebackers reading run keys quickly, so avoid calling it against defenses that have shown consistent gap discipline on previous snaps.

Usage Tips

Check the box count before the snap and only run this into light boxes of six or fewer defenders since the bunch set can bait a linebacker or safety into rotating out for coverage responsibilities. Use the bunch receivers presnap to identify man versus zone, if you see man coverage on the bunch you can motion one receiver to create natural rub separation while still handing off for the run. Hot route the backside receiver on a quick out or slant if you diagnose a blitz look, this gives you an outlet without abandoning the run fake entirely. This play hits hardest on early downs, first and ten or second and short, where defenses are not yet keyed to pass and will play more conservative fronts. Pair this call with Mtn RPO Peek Flats and Read Option from the same set so the defense has to respect both the give and the pull read, then mix in HB Counter to punish overaggressive linebacker flow to the play side.
