Landingzone Safety Punt Right is a special teams directional kick play out of the Safety Kickoff formation, designed to pin the return unit toward the right sideline in a safety kick situation. The punter aims the ball away from the middle of the field, forcing the return man to field the ball near the boundary and limiting his cutback lanes. This is not a man beater or zone beater in the traditional sense since it is a coverage kick, and the primary read progression for kick coverage defenders is to maintain outside contain first, then flow toward the ball once the returner commits to a direction.
Watch the return team splits pre-snap to see if the personnel is loaded toward the right sideline, which signals they expect this directional kick Key the returner depth at the snap since a shallow returner will have less time to read the ball flight to the sideline Identify the wedge blockers forming up front and use your fastest coverage defender to attack the seam before the wedge sets If the return team shows an empty backfield or unbalanced alignment, expect a designed return up the middle that can exploit over-pursuit toward the right sideline Post snap, track the ball off the punter foot and get width immediately, since defenders who take a straight downhill angle get walled off by blockers on the right side
Use this play after a safety when field position matters most since it forces the returner to work from a compressed angle
Check the return team pre-snap alignment to see if they are stacking the right side, and if so consider switching to Landingzone Safety Punt Left to attack the vacated space
Combine this play with Landingzone Safety Punt Middle in your special teams sequencing so opposing return teams cannot key on a directional tendency
User the outside contain defender on the right edge immediately after the snap to prevent the returner from bouncing it outside for a long gain
This play is most effective on artificial turf or in wind conditions blowing right to left since the natural kick shape and roll will amplify the directional placement
