Landingzone Heavy Safety Kick is a special teams kickoff formation designed to pin the return unit deep and control field position rather than run a traditional route concept. This is a safety kickoff variant, meaning it comes after a safety and kicks from the 20 yard line, so the coverage unit is built heavy with extra bodies near the middle of the field to limit explosive returns. The primary read for the kicking team is containing the return lanes and forcing the returner to cut back into a numbers disadvantage instead of chasing the ball outside.
Pre-snap, scan the return unit's blocking wedge to see if they are loading up the middle or setting an outside lane, since that tells you where your heavy coverage bodies need to funnel. Watch for a single deep returner versus a two man return look, because a two man look often signals a designed lateral or reverse that this heavy shell needs to respect on both sides. Post-kick, key the wedge blockers releasing first, they tell you the direction of the setup, and your leverage defenders should attack those blockers low to collapse the lane. If the return team spreads wide with blockers split outside the numbers, your heavy middle coverage can get outflanked, so be ready to rally hard to the sideline once the returner commits. Identify the returner's initial angle within the first two steps, since Heavy Safety Kick coverage relies on quick pursuit angles to close driving lanes before they open up.
Use Landingzone Heavy Safety Kick when you want a lower, more controlled kick that keeps the ball inside the landing zone and forces a return instead of a touchback.
Pre-snap, check the return team alignment and identify if they are stacking one side, then aim your kick away from that heavy side to limit lane advantages.
This heavy variant is best used when you want extra hang time and more defenders arriving in coverage windows, so pair it with a directional kick to the numbers rather than a deep boot.
Mix in Landingzone Heavy Safety Kick Left and Landingzone Heavy Safety Kick Right in sequence with this middle heavy variant so the return team cannot key on a consistent launch angle or landing spot.
Favor this play when protecting a late lead and you want to shrink the field, since the heavy coverage shell limits big returns better than the standard Landingzone Safety Kick.
