Landingzone Safety Kick is a special teams kickoff play run out of the Safety Kickoff formation, designed to pin the return team deep and limit big return opportunities. The kicking unit executes a controlled, lower-trajectory boot aimed at landing the ball short of the end zone, forcing the return man to field it inside the landing zone rather than take a touchback. Coverage lanes fan out in a standard spread cover pattern, with the primary read for the kicker being ball placement toward open grass away from the deepest return threat, while coverage players key on maintaining lane integrity and converging on the returner rather than any specific man or zone assignment.
Pre-snap, identify whether the return team is stacked on one side, which signals a wedge return, or spread evenly, which usually means a middle return design. Watch the deepest returner alignment: if he is shaded to a hash, expect the return to funnel toward the boundary and adjust your coverage lane accordingly. Post-kick, key on the wall-off blockers near midfield since they set the return lane, and user your fastest defender to shoot the gap before the wall forms. If the return team shows an unbalanced formation with extra blockers on the front line, expect a designed return up the middle and be ready to fill inside rather than staying wide. Against aggressive return schemes that release blockers early, this kick placement forces a fair catch or short return, effectively neutralizing the blitz-style return look before it develops.
Use this play in short field or must-pin situations when you do not want to risk a touchback and want the return team starting inside their own 25.
Before the snap, scan the return formation for stacked returners or a single deep man, since a single-returner look means you can safely aim the kick toward a sideline landing zone to limit cutback lanes.
If your opponent has shown explosive kick return plays, pair this with Landingzone Safety Kick Left or Landingzone Safety Kick Right to keep the return unit guessing on directional placement.
On the coverage side, user your fastest gunner or outside coverage man to force the returner to make an early cut, which slows down blocking schemes upfield.
Mix in Landingzone Heavy Safety Kick from the same set when facing a return team with strong blocking up front, since the heavier personnel grouping gives you more sustained coverage integrity at the second level.
