Landingzone Heavy Safety Kick Middle is a special teams kickoff play from the Safety Kickoff formation, designed to place the ball toward the middle of the field on a free kick after a safety. This is a heavy variant, meaning the kicking unit stacks extra hands and bigger bodies near the landing zone to clog return lanes and force fair catches or short field returns. There is no route progression or coverage beater here since this is a coverage focused kickoff play, and the primary read for the kicking team is containing the middle lane while funneling the returner toward pursuit angles rather than the sideline.
Pre-snap, identify how the return team stacks its wall blockers near the middle of the field, since a heavy middle stack signals they expect this landing zone. Watch the depth of the deepest safety on the return unit, if he sits shallow he is anticipating a shorter kick and will attack downhill quickly. Post-kick, key on the wedge blockers forming up in the middle lane, your coverage unit needs to avoid clumping and instead maintain lane discipline to prevent one big seam. If the return team shows a heavy left or right lean in their blocking wall, this middle kick can catch them out of position and force a fair catch inside the numbers. Be wary of return schemes that bait a middle kick with soft coverage up front, then release blockers laterally, since your gunners need to locate the ball and adjust their pursuit angle immediately after it lands.
Use this play whenever you are forced into a safety kick and want to control field position by directing the ball to the middle of the field rather than the edges.
Pair this with Landingzone Heavy Safety Kick Left and Landingzone Heavy Safety Kick Right in your play-calling sequence so opposing return teams cannot key on a consistent landing spot.
Since the kick trajectory targets the middle, coach your outside gunners to squeeze inward early and use the extra heavy personnel to seal running lanes before the returner reaches full speed.
Favor this play when you have a strong specialist and want to shorten the field for the return team, cutting down big return risk compared to a deep boundary kick.
If your opponent has shown an explosive middle return in a previous kickoff, mix in Landingzone Safety Kick Middle or the Left and Right variants from the standard Safety Kick group to disguise your coverage intent.
