Landingzone is a special teams set inside the Safety Kickoff formation, and it is important to understand up front that this is a kickoff and free kick package, not an offensive personnel grouping. Instead of receivers and tight ends, you are working with a kicker (or punter on the Safety Punt variants), a wedge of coverage players, and gunners spread across the numbers. The "Safety" label refers to the free kick following a safety, which is why the set carries both Safety Kick and Safety Punt play art: the rules let you kick off a tee or punt the ball after conceding a safety, and Landingzone gives you both options from the same alignment.
What separates Landingzone from other sets in the Safety Kickoff formation is directional control paired with the Heavy grouping. You get Landingzone Safety Kick Left, Middle, and Right, the Punt equivalents in all three directions, and the Heavy Safety Kick family that pulls extra bodies into the coverage lanes rather than spreading them thin. The Heavy variants trade sideline containment for interior wall building, which matters because free kick returns in Madden are often taken up the middle where the return blocking AI sets its wedge. The directional plays let you place the ball away from the opponent's primary user-controlled returner, which is the single biggest factor in limiting free kick return yardage.
Because there is no offensive personnel here, the "matchup advantage" is purely about kick placement versus return alignment. Reading where the return team stacks its blockers pre-snap tells you which Landingzone direction to select, and the Punt options let you flip to a higher, shorter hang time ball when the opponent has a returner with elite Speed and Elusiveness ratings. Treat this set as a placement tool, not a scheme.
Read the return alignment before you snap: if the opponent stacks blockers to one side, select the Landingzone direction that kicks away from that wall.
Use Landingzone Safety Punt Left or Right with reduced power when you are protecting a late lead and would rather concede yardage than risk an explosive return.
Pick a Heavy Safety Kick variant when the opponent has been returning up the middle, since the extra interior bodies force the ball carrier to redirect and lose momentum.
Take manual control of a gunner after the kick and stay in your lane rather than jumping the ball carrier, because overpursuit is how free kick returns turn into touchdowns.
Vary your direction call across the game so a user who reads your kick tendencies cannot pre-set his return blocking to the same side every time.
