Heavy 2 Trap is a Cover 2 zone blitz look out of the Quarter formation's Over Load set, built with heavy Big Quarter 1-3-7 personnel. Both deep safeties sit at the top of the diagram in their traditional Cover 2 halves, while the underneath defenders show a trap coverage shell with linebackers dropping into short zones on each side and three rushers coming off the strong side edge, with two more rushers attacking off the weak side. The primary read is the pre-snap identification of which side the offense overloads, since the trap defenders underneath are baiting quick throws into the shallow zones while the deep safeties stay disciplined over the top.
Defensive Reads
Watch the receiver alignment pre-snap to identify which side the offense is trying to overload, then anticipate the trap defenders squatting on shallow crossers and drags to that side. Key the offensive line splits and running back alignment post-snap, since a heavy run action will pull the trap defenders up quickly and can be exploited by play-action if the offense recognizes the aggressive underneath drops. This call beats quick-game man beaters like slants, spot routes, and shallow crosses because the trap defenders are sitting in passing lanes rather than playing true man technique. It is vulnerable to deep vertical routes attacking the seams between the safeties and the underneath trap defenders, so watch for four verticals or seam concepts that stress the middle of the field before the safeties can rotate. Also key linebacker blitz timing off the strong side, since the three-man rush package can be picked up easily by a hot route if the offensive line slides protection toward the overload.
Usage Tips
Diagnose the offensive formation strength pre-snap and shade your trap defenders toward the side with more eligible receivers to bait the quarterback into a shallow throw. Use this call on early downs or in obvious quick-game situations where offenses like to attack the middle of the field with slants and drags, since the trap zone underneath is designed to jump those routes. Hot route the underneath defenders if you see a heavy run look, sliding one trap defender closer to the box to help against inside runs without abandoning the shell. Pair this call with Heavy 1 Rat or 3 Rat Zone in your play-calling sequence so opponents cannot key on the same underneath zone shell every snap, then mix in Cover 0 Blitz or DB Blitz 2 to punish quarterbacks who sit in the pocket expecting soft zone coverage. Stay disciplined with your deep safeties, do not bite on double moves since the top of the defense is designed to stay over the top in true Cover 2 fashion.
