Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, check the offensive formation for stacked or bunched receivers to one side, which can create natural picks against your flat defenders and open up seam throws behind them. Post-snap, trust the deep thirds to eliminate explosive plays but stay alert for RPO reads that attack the box in front of your five-man rush, since the underneath zones are stretched thin against run-pass options.
Usage Tips
Call this play on early downs when you expect the offense to test the deep middle of the field with go routes or posts, since the deep third defenders have help over the top. Use your pre-snap alignment check to confirm the offense has not stacked receivers to one side, which can overload one of your deep thirds. Spy the flat zone defenders on quick game and bunch formations, since those purple zones are responsible for flushing out speed outs and flat routes before they develop. Pair this call with Heavy 1 Rat or 3 Rat Zone in your play-calling sequence to disguise whether you are dropping into a true Cover 3 shell or rolling a robber underneath, keeping the quarterback guessing on levels routes. Avoid calling this on third and long against spread sets, since the shallow hook zone can be stressed by crossing routes if the linebacker gets picked.
