Defensive Reads
Pre-snap, check if the offense has stacked or bunched receivers to one side, since Heavy 1 Rat's overload shell is built to match numbers against that formation. Watch the single deep defender's alignment, if he cheats too far to one side pre-snap it can tip which half of the field is more vulnerable to a deep shot. Usage Tips
Use this call on early downs or in short yardage situations where the offense is likely to attack underneath with drag or shallow cross concepts, since the robber is sitting right in that window. Pre-snap, identify if the offense has a single-back set with quick-hitting routes, because Heavy 1 Rat's five-man underneath crash can beat those concepts before they develop. Bait the quarterback into thinking it is a standard Cover 1 look, then disguise the robber's depth at the snap to bait a throw into the middle of the field. Pair this call with Cover 0 Blitz in the same set to keep quarterbacks guessing between a true blitz and this man-match rat look, since both start from the same personnel and shell. Avoid calling this against heavy play-action rollout teams since the aggressive underneath crash can be susceptible to deep shots if your single deep defender gets beat.
