Breakdown

HB Stretch out of the Pistol Wing 12 personnel is an outside zone run play with the HB taking a lateral handoff and pressing the edge before reading his blocks. The line flows laterally with zone steps, working to reach and seal defenders to create a cutback lane while the two TEs and wing back support the edge on the play side. This is a pure zone run play designed to stress lateral pursuit, and the primary read progression for the HB is playside cutback, bounce outside, or cut it back in behind the zone flow depending on how the defensive front and linebackers flow to the ball.

Defensive Reads

Watch linebacker depth and flow pre-snap, since fast flowing linebackers who overrun the play side are exactly what the cutback lane is designed to exploit. Identify if the defense is running a scrape exchange or has a defensive end sitting on the edge, since disciplined edge play kills the bounce outside option. Look for a nano blitz or overload front to the play side, which can beat outside zone before the line even gets its zone steps set. User controlled defenders spying the cutback lane or a linebacker staying home in the A gap are signs the defense has scouted the zone run tendency. Cover 1 or Cover 3 with aggressive downhill linebackers is where this play struggles most, while light boxes and zone coverages that keep linebackers reading are where HB Stretch consistently gains yards.

Usage Tips

Check the box count pre-snap and only run HB Stretch into light boxes of six or fewer defenders since the zone blocking scheme loses leverage against extra run defenders. Use motion out of the Wing set to identify man versus zone coverage and to potentially get a numbers advantage on the edge if the defense does not adjust. Hot route the backside TE into a stalk block if you see edge pressure looks, since the zone scheme needs that seal to protect the cutback lane. Pair this play with PA Boot and Read Option from the same formation so the defense has to respect the outside zone flow before you hit them with play-action off identical run action. Use HB Stretch on early downs in normal or run heavy personnel situations to stay ahead of the chains and set up explosive shot plays later in the sequence.
