Breakdown

TE Stick out of the Pistol Wing 12 personnel set shows a quick five man route concept with no visible extra protection tag. The backside X runs a deep dig/comeback breaking outside near the numbers, while the playside stack has a corner route flagging up the sideline and a stick route sitting down in the flat underneath it, creating a natural high low read on that side. This is a classic stick concept built as a man and zone beater, giving the quarterback a fast rhythm throw against blitz or zone drops with the corner route as the field-stretching answer versus man coverage.

Defensive Reads

Key the playside linebacker depth at the snap, if he sinks hard under the corner route he is taking away the top and forcing you to check down to the stick. Watch the cornerback over the stick side receiver, if he sits flat footed in a zone drop that confirms a zone shell and the stick to corner combo will be open in rhythm. On the backside, if the defense rotates a safety over the top of the X route it signals two high shell, which tightens the window on that deep breaking route and should push your eyes back to the strong side stick concept. Beware disguised blitzes where a linebacker crashes off the edge, since the quick stick and corner combo can get there fast but a free rusher off the backside can disrupt the timing before the corner route develops. This concept struggles against aggressive man press with underneath help, since a jam on the stick runner combined with a trail defender on the corner route can take away both options in the quick game.

Usage Tips

Use this on early downs or third and short since the stick route gives you a safe, high percentage completion underneath if the corner route is covered.

Pre-snap, identify if the defense is showing two high safeties or single high, because a single high shell usually means the corner route on the stick side has one on one leverage you can attack.

If you see man coverage indicators like tight cornerback alignment or linebackers cheating toward the TE, hot route the flat runner into a quicker option or take the shot on the corner route immediately.

Against zone heavy defenses, work the stick to corner high low read on the playside stack first before ever looking backside to the X route.

Pair this with PA Boot or PA Ctr Waggle from the same set to keep the defense honest on run action, then come back to TE Stick to punish defenders selling out on the play-action fakes.
