Breakdown

This WR Screen from the Pistol Wing (12 personnel) formation shows a bubble screen concept to the outside receiver. The near receiver runs a quick out and up as a decoy vertical clear-out route while the perimeter blocker (X receiver) sets up to lead block for the screen target, who releases and works toward the sideline to catch the pass behind the line of scrimmage. Offensive linemen release upfield to get in front of the screen, and the primary read is simply the flare route to the flanker, with the quarterback throwing it almost immediately off the snap.

Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, identify if the defense is showing blitz or man coverage with the corner playing tight technique, since that removes an underneath defender and clears space for the screen. Watch for a slot or overhang defender sitting at the line of scrimmage, as a disciplined edge defender can read the screen and squeeze it for a loss. Post-snap, key on any user-controlled defender flowing outside immediately, since a lurking linebacker or safety can jump the throwing lane and undercut the pass. Zone coverages with corners playing off and reading the quarterback's eyes are the biggest threat, as they can break on the screen before the blockers set up. If the defensive line stunts or contains rather than crashing upfield, the screen loses its blocking numbers advantage and the play becomes a low-value gain.

Usage Tips

Call this on early downs or after a run play to catch aggressive linebackers and defensive linemen crashing upfield out of their gaps.

Look for man coverage or blitz pre-snap since both leave the perimeter light and let your blockers get clean releases on the corner or overhang defender.

Hot route the clear-out receiver on a quicker route if you see soft zone underneath so the defender assigned to that man does not sit and jump the screen.

Pair this with HB Slip Screen and Read Option in the same drive to keep defenders honest about crashing downhill on every snap.

Avoid calling this against Cover 2 or Cover 3 shells with disciplined corners who sit outside, since they can read and blow up the screen before blockers arrive.
