Breakdown

Mtn HB Power O is a gap-scheme run play out of Pistol Wing with 12 personnel, featuring pre-snap motion into the backfield or across the formation before the snap. The blocking scheme pulls the backside guard (and often a tight end or fullback-type wing) to lead through the hole while the offensive line down blocks to seal the point of attack, creating a power lane for the HB to follow. This is a run play designed to attack downhill gaps rather than beat coverage, so the primary read is the HB following the pulling lead blocker and reading the block of the playside kickout man before deciding to bend it back or press through the hole.

Defensive Reads

Watch for an extra linebacker or safety creeping into the box pre-snap, since stacked fronts with 8 in the box can blow up the power scheme before the pull blocker gets there. Key the playside defensive end and outside linebacker, if they crash hard down the line, the HB should bounce it outside off the kickout block. A hard edge defender or blitzing slot corner can beat the pulling lineman to the point of attack and force a negative play, so look for overload blitz packages pre-snap. If the defense shows man coverage and follows the motion man, expect fewer defenders in the box and a cleaner running lane. Two deep safeties with light box numbers signal a favorable run front, while single-high looks with stacked linebackers mean the defense is sitting on the run.

Usage Tips

Use the pre-snap motion to identify if the defense is running with the man in motion, which reveals man coverage or a base run front adjustment.

Call this on early downs like 1st and 10 or 2nd and short to stay ahead of the chains and keep the defense honest against pass-heavy tendencies.

Attack fronts with light boxes (6 or fewer defenders in the box) since the extra gap created by the pulling blocker overwhelms light fronts.

Pair this with PA Power O and PA Ctr Waggle from the same set so the play-action look off identical formation and motion keeps linebackers frozen on subsequent calls.

Use manual control on the pulling blocker in short yardage to ensure the kickout block lands on the correct force defender rather than letting the AI whiff.
