PA Boot from Pistol Wing 12 personnel is a play-action bootleg pass that sells the run fake before the QB rolls out to the right edge. Off the fake, the outside receiver runs a corner route stemming vertically before breaking to the sideline, while the inside receiver works a shallow drag across the field underneath. On the boot side, an attached blocker releases into the flat as the checkdown/emergency valve after helping sell the run action. The primary read progression starts with the corner route for an explosive shot down the sideline, then works down to the flat release as the roll continues, with the shallow drag as the backside crossing outlet if the pocket collapses.
Defensive Reads
Watch the flow of the linebackers immediately after the snap: if they bite hard on the play-action fake and flow toward the line, the shallow drag and flat route will be wide open underneath. Key the boot-side cornerback's leverage before the snap, if he is playing outside shade with no safety help over the top, the corner route has a clean win down the sideline. Identify whether the defense is in a true Cover 3 rollout shell, since defenders trained to spot-drop to the flat and curl zones can sit on the flat route and jump the throw. Watch for a user-controlled defender spying the QB or crashing the edge on the boot side, which signals contain pressure designed to strip the play-action fake and force a quick, inaccurate throw. Man coverage with no safety help over the corner route is the biggest defensive mismatch this play exploits, while a two-high shell with disciplined linebackers sitting in their zones is the toughest look to attack.
Usage Tips
Use pre-snap motion or a quick glance at the strong safety to confirm whether the defense is rotating to the boot side before the snap. This play punishes single high shells and Cover 3 rollout defenders who bite on the run fake, so call it on early downs when the defense is stacking the box. If the corner route is capped by a deep half safety, hot route the flat defender's man to a quick out to speed up the timing against man coverage. Pair this with HB Slam or Mtn HB Power O earlier in the sequence so the play fake actually holds linebackers and the safety cheats up, making the boot concept hit harder later in the series. Avoid calling this against heavy pressure packages since the QB rollout mechanics limit your ability to escape contain if the edge is not blocked cleanly.
