Breakdown

X Seam out of Pistol Open Flex Close (11 personnel) sends the X receiver straight up the seam as the deep vertical read while the two inside slot receivers run crossing routes underneath, one on a deep dig that breaks across the middle and the other on a shallow drag through the flat to the opposite side. The HB releases on a check release swing route to the flat as a built in safety valve against pressure. This is a man beater at its core, the seam route stresses a single high safety and any linebacker in man coverage on the crossers, with the primary read starting on the X seam route, working to the deep crosser if the safety rotates over the top, and finally checking down to the HB in the flat.

Defensive Reads

Man coverage with a single high safety is the biggest vulnerability, the X Seam route will win over the top before help arrives. Watch for the safety cheating toward the seam pre-snap, that indicates Cover 3 or Cover 1 and signals you should look to the crossing routes instead. If the corner presses the X at the line, expect man coverage underneath, use the release to fight for inside positioning on the seam. A linebacker sinking deep into the middle of the field post-snap shows Cover 3 or Tampa 2, which can undercut the seam route, so climb the ladder to the deep crosser. Blitz packages that bring extra defenders off the edge often leave the crossers uncovered against zone blitz shells, so check the HB flat route as an immediate answer if protection breaks down.

Usage Tips

Look for single high safety shells pre-snap since the X Seam route is designed to split the difference between the safety and outside corner.

If the defense shows two high safeties, hot route the X to a slant or hitch to avoid throwing into a bracket over the seam.

Use motion or a quick glance at the linebacker depth to confirm whether the crossers will have room to work, deep linebacker drops signal a zone shell you can attack with the dig route.

Pair this play with PA Boot or Mtn PA Portland Wheel earlier in a series so the seam route conditions the safety to bite on shorter routes, opening up the deep shot later.

On third and medium, prioritize the deep crosser over the seam if the corner shows outside leverage, since the crosser settles into soft zones vacated by blitzing linebackers.
