The running back takes the handoff out of the pistol alignment and reads the zone blocking surface, working downhill through the interior gaps as the offensive line moves in unison to the play side. This is a run play built on the inside zone blocking scheme, designed to create a natural cutback lane if the initial hole gets clogged. Primary read progression is the running back reading the play side double team first, then working through the B gap before bouncing to the cutback lane if defenders flow too hard.
Defensive Reads
Pre-snap, identify if the defense is stacked in the box with an extra linebacker or safety creeping down, this signals a run blitz that inside zone struggles against without a hot route adjustment. Watch the play side defensive tackle and end alignment, a shaded nose tackle or 3-technique can clog the primary running lane and force an early cutback read. Post-snap, key the linebacker flow, if the mike and will linebackers overpursue to the play side, the cutback lane opens up for a big gain. User-controlled defenders flying downhill from a lurk position at the second level are the biggest threat to this play, so avoid forcing the run into a stacked box when facing an aggressive human defender. Cover 1 or Cover 3 looks with single-high safeties tend to be more vulnerable since there is less immediate run support, while Cover 4 or two-high shells with safeties in the box shut this down quickly.

Use the cutback lane aggressively against teams that flow hard to the play side, patience is key since the design rewards backs who press the hole and read the double team before committing.
Pair this play with PA Boot or Mtn PA Portland Wheel later in a drive to freeze linebackers who bite on the same zone action, since the run action sells the play fake.
Against light boxes with only six or seven defenders, run this out of no huddle to punish defenses that stay in nickel or dime personnel.
