HB Dive out of Pistol Open Flex Close is a straight downhill run play with the HB aligned behind the QB and lined up to hit the A gap immediately at the snap. The offensive line shows a standard inside zone style blocking scheme, with the interior linemen (guards and center) climbing to the second level while the tackles and TE handle down blocks on the edges to seal the box. This is a pure run play designed to attack the middle of the defense before linebackers can flow and fill, with the primary read being the frontside A gap and a quick bounce to the backside cutback lane if the nose is shaded wrong.
Watch the middle linebacker depth pre-snap, if he is sitting shallow and square to the line he is likely reading run fits and will close the A gap fast. Key the defensive tackle alignment, a shaded nose tackle in the A gap forces the dive to bounce, while a base 4i or 3 technique alignment opens the frontside gap cleanly. Post-snap, user the middle linebacker or a spy defender to attack the mesh point directly, since this cuts off the dive before the back can get vertical. Look for run blitzes or A gap fire zone pressure, these completely erase HB Dive because extra defenders fill the exact gap the play is designed to hit. If the safety rotates down pre-snap into the box, expect a loaded run fit and consider checking to a play-action shot from this same formation instead.
Use HB Dive on early downs when the defense shows a light box or is loaded up expecting pass, since the quick mesh point punishes slow linebacker triggers.
Check the defensive front pre-snap, if you see six or more defenders stacked in the box, consider audibling to Inside Zone Wk instead to get an extra blocker angle.
Pair HB Dive with RPO Read Flat Wheel and PA Boot from this same set so defenders keying run flow get gashed on the backside when you sell the same mesh point look.
Snap the ball quickly after the read to prevent the defense from diagnosing the dive, since hesitation kills this play's explosiveness against fast-flowing linebackers.
Against man coverage looks with single high safety, HB Dive is efficient clock control, but save it for third and short since it lacks explosive big play upside on its own.
