Motion Counter Y is a counter run out of Pistol Open Flex Close with 11 personnel, using a receiver motion across the formation before the snap to help identify the defensive front and add misdirection. The blocking scheme shows the offensive line pulling the backside guard and tackle to lead the way for the ball carrier, who takes a counter step before hitting the hole created by the down blocks up front. This is a power run play designed to attack gaps opened by the pulling linemen, and the primary read progression is for the ball carrier to press the play side gap, read the pulling linemen, and cut off their blocks into the alley they create.
Watch the linebacker depth and flow before the snap since heavy blitz packages or stacked fronts can beat the counter path before the pullers get set. Check safety alignment after the motion, if a safety rotates down into the box it signals run support that can clog the counter lane. Key the play side defensive end and outside linebacker, if they crash down hard on the initial line movement the counter should hit for a clean cut. Man coverage defenders who follow the motion man out of the backfield can leave the counter lane thinner in space, giving the runner a better angle. Look for edge blitzers timed to the snap, since a well timed contain blitz from the counter side can blow up the pulling linemen and force a negative play.
Use the pre-snap motion to bait linebackers into flowing early and expose their run fits before the snap.
Call this on early downs like first and second and short to medium yardage when defenses are more likely to sit in base run fronts.
Pair this with Motion Zone Split and Inside Zone Wk in the same drive so defenses cannot key on the pulling linemen every time you go under center in Pistol.
If the defense shows a heavy box with linebackers crashing down immediately after motion, consider bailing to PA Boot or RPO Read Flat Wheel to punish overaggressive run fits.
Control the fullback or lead blocker manually if available to smash through the alley defender and spring the extra yard after the initial hole closes.
