Breakdown

Nickel Blitz 3 sends a five-man pressure package while dropping into a Cover 3 shell behind it, with the slot corner and one linebacker crashing off the edges alongside the interior rush. The two outside cornerbacks and deep safety split the field into thirds, while the underneath zone defender in the middle sits shallow to wall off crossers and check-down routes. This is a zone blitz designed to disguise pressure and beat both man and quick-game concepts, with the primary read being the quarterback's eyes: if he holds the ball past the first two seconds, the blitz should collapse the pocket before any deep third route matures.

Defensive Reads

Watch for hot routes to the flat immediately after the snap since underneath zone defenders in this call are responsible for those short throws. If the quarterback identifies the blitz and throws quick to the boundary, your underneath defender must jump the route rather than sit and read. Man beater concepts like slants and drags into the vacated blitz lane are the biggest threat, so trust your zone drop rather than jumping the shallow route too early. Post-snap, watch the deep third safety's positioning against double moves, since Cover 3 shells are vulnerable to double post and skinny post routes if the safety bites on the underneath crosser. Against play-action, the blitzing defenders must stay disciplined and not overrun the mesh point, since PA concepts can freeze the rush lanes and open cutback lanes for the running back.

Usage Tips

Disguise the blitz by showing a two-high shell pre-snap and rotating the safety down to his deep third just before the snap to bait the quarterback into a bad presnap read.

Use this call on third and medium to third and long when offenses are likely to run five-step drop passing games or shotgun spread concepts that need extra time to develop.

Pair Nickel Blitz 3 with Cover 3 Sky or Cover 3 Cloud from the same set so the offense cannot key blitz versus coverage based on your presnap alignment.

User the slot corner blitzer off the edge to contain mobile quarterbacks and prevent scrambles that would otherwise beat the zone drops behind the rush.

Call this against empty or trips formations where the offense only has four or fewer blockers, since the extra rusher will consistently win one on one against a back or tight end.
