Breakdown

Nickel Blitz out of the Triple set in Nickel is a five man pressure package that brings extra defenders off the edge while dropping the remaining defenders into a zone shell behind it. The diagram shows four underneath defenders (squares and the circle at the second level) crashing downhill toward the line of scrimmage on blitz paths, with one flat defender to the left also stepping up into the run/pass gap. Behind that pressure, four defenders (the X icons) hold deep zone landmarks, giving you a zone shell over the top while the blitz tries to disrupt the quarterback's timing before route combos develop.

Defensive Reads

Watch the running back pre snap, if he stays in to block that confirms the offense expects pressure and you should trust your rush lanes to win fast. Key the offensive line splits, wider splits often mean the quarterback is expecting to throw quick game or screens to beat the blitz, so keep discipline in your underneath zone drops. This call is effective against man beater route concepts and slower developing play-action rollouts because the extra rusher disrupts the pocket before deep routes have time to break open. It is vulnerable to hot route adjustments into quick slants or screens toward the blitz side, so user a linebacker to sit on the most likely check-down lane if you diagnose blitz late. Beware empty backfield or trips formations that overload one side, since that can create a numbers advantage in the pattern read that your zone shell struggles to cover if the rush does not get home quickly.

Usage Tips

Call this on early downs or third and medium to catch offenses expecting a standard four man rush and settling into their protection calls.

Check the offensive personnel and formation width pre snap, if the offense spreads you out with three or more receivers, make sure your zone drops account for the extra vertical stems.

Use pre-snap adjustments to slide protection recognition away from the blitz side if you see the offense sliding their line, this keeps your extra rusher unblocked longer.

Pair this call with Cover 3 Cloud or Cover 3 Sky earlier in the series so quarterbacks cannot key blitz tells off your safety depth or corner alignment.

Mix in Nickel Blitz 1, Nickel Blitz 2 and Nickel Blitz 3 from the same set to disguise which gap or lane the extra rusher is attacking, forcing the offense to hold protection calls longer.
