Nickel 4-2-5 puts four defensive linemen, two linebackers, and five defensive backs on the field, typically three cornerbacks and two safeties, making it the default answer to 11 personnel offenses. The extra DB replaces your third linebacker, so you trade run fit strength for coverage speed and the ability to match a slot receiver with an actual cornerback instead of a 78 speed MLB. Because you can play this against both spread and single back sets without subbing, offenses lose the ability to bait you into a personnel mismatch, and any four man front pressure you run comes with two off ball defenders free to blitz, spy, or drop into the hook zones.
