Tampa 2 Contain is a zone coverage play out of the Nickel 4-2-5 that drops the Mike linebacker deep down the middle of the field to take away the seam and post routes that traditionally torch Cover 2. The two safeties bracket the deep thirds while the corners and outside linebackers sink into short zones, and the "Contain" tag keeps the edge defenders from crashing hard so quarterback rollouts and scrambles stay boxed in. This is a zone beater killer rather than an offensive concept, and the primary read for the defense is the deep middle hole first, then working outside to the flats and curl zones as the quarterback's eyes move.
Pre-snap, identify if the offense is running trips or bunch to one side, since that often signals a high low read on the flat and corner zones that this coverage has to honor. Key the tight end or slot receiver running a seam or post route first, since the deep middle linebacker's entire job is to erase that throwing lane. Watch for switch releases and mesh concepts underneath, since the shorter zone defenders can get picked if they do not stay square and read the quarterback's shoulders. This shell beats levels concepts and deep crossers but is vulnerable to quick outs and flat routes if your underneath defenders sink too fast without respecting the short game. Post-snap, if the quarterback is rolling out, trust the contain rule on your edge defenders and do not let them crash inside, since spying the middle only works if the pocket integrity holds on the perimeter.
Call this on third and medium to third and long when you expect the offense to attack the middle of the field with dig or post routes since the extra deep defender closes that window.
Use the contain tag specifically against mobile quarterbacks who like to escape the pocket on designed rollouts or when the pocket collapses, since your ends and OLBs will stay disciplined on the edge instead of getting sucked upfield.
Pair this with Cover 3 Match or Cover 3 Buzz Match in your play-calling sequence so the offense sees a similar pre-snap shell but gets a different deep middle rotation, which disguises your coverage intentions.
User the Mike linebacker in the deep middle zone if you want to bait quarterbacks into thinking the seam is open, then close it late for a big hit or interception.
Avoid calling this against heavy four verticals looks unless you trust your corners to hold up on the outside, since the deep middle help removes a safety from top coverage on the boundary.
