Cover 3 Buzz Match is a zone coverage play out of the Nickel 2-4 Wide set that rotates a safety down into the box while dropping the other deep safety into a single high shell, giving you a three deep, four under match zone look. The buzz safety reads the number two receiver and can sink into a robber zone or buzz outside to help on flat routes, while the corners play matchup zone technique on the outside thirds. This is a zone defense designed to defend both quick game and vertical shots, and the primary read progression for the defense starts with the flat defenders keying the number two receiver, then working to the deep third defenders reading the number one receiver vertically before working back to any crossers or dig routes settling in the middle hook zone.
Watch the number two receiver at the snap, since the buzz safety keys this receiver to determine whether he sinks into a robber zone or expands to the flat. This coverage is strong against slot fades, quick outs, and shallow cross combos because the match rules allow the flat defender to sit on underneath breaks instead of running with the receiver. Vertical stretch concepts like four verticals or a skinny post paired with a corner route can stress this shell if the deep third defenders do not get enough depth before turning to run with their assigned third. Pre-snap, check the strong safety depth and alignment over the slot, since a shallow buzz safety alignment signals the rotation and tips off receivers who will be doubled versus singled in coverage. Post-snap, watch for user controlled lurk defenders sitting in the intermediate hook zone, since a smart user can jump underneath crossing routes or curl routes that the CPU AI would normally allow to complete.
Use this play on early downs or second and medium when you expect play action or a shallow to intermediate passing attack rather than a pure vertical shot.
