This is a zone beater package designed to stop four verticals and deep crossing combos, and the primary read for the defense is safety to number two receiver to backside hook defender before committing to run support or deep coverage.
Watch number two on both sides at the snap since the safety rules key off that receiver to decide zone or match responsibilities. If the offense releases four vertical threats, expect both safeties to sink deep and the corners to squeeze outside routes toward the middle help. Look for the flat defenders and hook zone linebackers to widen or sink based on tight end and slot releases, since a late break underneath can catch them out of position. This shell struggles against quick game concepts like slants and shallow crosses run with rub action, so if the offense stacks receivers pre-snap be ready to sink your underneath defenders faster than normal. Beware nano blitz packages disguised behind this shell since the extra rush lanes can be exposed if a user does not get an accurate presnap read on the number of down linemen versus blockers.
Call Cover 9 Zone on third and medium to long when you expect the offense to stretch the field vertically since the safeties are trained to sink on go routes and deep posts.
Pre-snap, identify if the offense is running four verticals or a stick concept with a flood route, since the underneath zone defenders need to be ready to sink or squat depending on number two release.
User the strong safety or free safety to rob any deep crossers, since the AI match logic can be baited by good route timing in one on one online play.
Pair this call with Cover 3 Match or Cov 3 Buzz Match WK earlier in a series so the offense sees a similar deep shell but cannot key the same rules, then swap into Cover 9 Zone to sit on a crossing route they liked before.
Avoid calling this against heavy run personnel or trips bunch sets since the underneath zone has fewer bodies close to the box and can be gashed by inside runs or quick screens.
