Cover 3 Cloud is a zone coverage play out of the Nickel 2-4 Wide set that rolls the corner into a cloud technique, meaning the cornerback sits over the flat while the safety rotates over the top to help on deep outside routes. Underneath, the linebackers and nickel defender wall off the short and intermediate middle, while three deep defenders split the field into thirds. This is a zone beater killer against quick out and flat routes since the cloud corner squats hard, so as the defense you are reading the offense from outside in: corner reads flat first, safety reads vertical threats second, and the middle backers read crossers and hooks last.
Pre-snap, identify if the offense has a single receiver isolated to the cloud side, this alignment is designed to shut down quick game and smoke screens to that receiver. Post-snap, key the running back and tight end releases first since crossers and drags into the vacated middle zone are the primary way offenses attack this shell. Watch for four vertical route concepts, if all three deep defenders are forced to widen or run with verticals, the middle hook zone becomes exposed for a scrambling quarterback or check down. This coverage struggles against levels concepts and deep out routes that hit right as the cloud corner is still reading the flat, so user control that corner in must win situations against savvy route runners.
